Purpose of Texas Baptist Home
The Texas Baptist Home is committed to the Family. We believe the family is a beautiful picture to our world from God about how He loves and cares for each of us. The family is a love story that is sent straight from Heaven and it is our Christian responsibility to see to it that this story never dies. He has called the staff, supporters and volunteers of The Texas Baptist Home to fight for the preservation of the sanctity of the family!
This ministry exists to protect the sanctity of human life and to promote the preservation of the family. This purpose manifests itself in preventative, rehabilitative, and specialized services to children, youth, adults and families. The aim of these programs is to enable this ministry, local churches, and the community to meet more effectively the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs of individuals and families.
The Texas Baptist Home provides these services as a benevolent, educational, and evangelistic outreach of the churches of the Baptist Missionary Association of Texas.
In 1908, the Baptist Missionary Association of Texas met to discus the plight of orphan children in Texas. The decision was made that an Orphanage was a necessity. A committee was chosen to secure a location. The city of Waxahachie donated $1,500.00 and was chosen as the location for Texas Baptist Orphanage. This childcare facility opened its doors in January 1910 shortly after receiving a license from the State of Texas.
Since the mid to late 1950’s, the definition of “orphan” changed. Most of the children in care were dependent and neglected children with one or both parents living. In 1964, the name was changed to Texas Baptist Home for Children to better reflect the population of the campus. The children are no longer housed in a large dormitory, but in cottages to reflect a more home like setting.
In 2009, an office was opened in Bedford to continue to address the needs of children. As Texas Baptist Home for Children enter a second century of service, it continues provide residential care to children and gives hope and support to those who are facing an unplanned pregnancy. Our adoption services are provided at no cost to the expectant mother.
